Bone Broth – Simple, Easy, and Good For Your Health

Bone broth is the latest holistic remedy to what ails you.  For those who don’t know what it is, bone broth is made from beef bones that are simmered in water and spices for 24 to 48 hours. Chicken and sometimes fish bones are used as well and occasionally vegetables are added to give it extra flavor.  Bone broth is easily digested and provides calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulfur chondroitin, glucosamine, and various trace minerals along with amino acids that the body can easily absorb and use for overall good health.  Gelatin released from the bones during the cooking process also supports digestive and joint health as well as healthy hair and nail growth. Bone broth is believed to help fight flus and colds, support the healing of a “leaky gut”, and may decrease joint pain and inflammation.

Easy to make, bone broth has been around for a long time.  Various cultures and generations have made and used bone broth to stay healthy.  One study looking at the medicinal value of good old fashioned chicken soup that grandmother and great grandmother made found chicken soup provided a mild anti-inflammatory effect that reduced the length of illness from a cold and decreased the runny nose, coughs, and sneezing that accompanies it.  In addition chicken soup is an excellent source of B vitamins and other nutrients that confers many a health benefit.

Making Bone Broth Is Easy

Bone broth is very simple and inexpensive to make – roast beef bones in the oven for about 30 minutes to bring out the flavor and then place them or chicken bones into a crockpot.  Cover the bones with water, adding organic apple cider vinegar to release the minerals from the bones.  Add spices and bring to a boil.  Lower heat and simmer for 24 to 48 hours. Skim the top layer off the broth and discard it and the bones. Remember to scoop out the marrow from the bones and mix into the broth. Also strain the broth to remove any bone fragments. Cool down quickly and refrigerate.  It’s that easy.  You may also add carrots, celery, parsley, and onion to make the broth more flavorable. Salt and pepper should be added to taste after it is cooked.  And if you are not a cook, you can buy it in powder form and use in smoothies or as a hot beverage.
